Master three important conjunctions for complex sentences

trotzdem

despite / nevertheless

Used to express contrast when something happens against expectations or despite a condition

Examples:

Hien hat et schwéier. Trotzdem ass hien zoufridden.

He has it difficult. Nevertheless, he is satisfied.

Et war kaal. Trotzdem sinn si spazéieren gaang.

It was cold. Despite that, they went for a walk.

Si huet kee Zäit. Trotzdem mécht si d'Ëbung.

She has no time. Nevertheless, she does the exercise.

allerdings

however / admittedly

Used to acknowledge something or add a limiting/qualifying statement; admits something but also points out a limitation

Examples:

Hien ass klok. Allerdings arbëcht hien net genuch.

He is smart. However, he doesn't work enough.

Dat ass schéin. Allerdings ass et ze deier.

That's beautiful. Admittedly, it's too expensive.

Si kann gutt schwammen. Allerdings ass si bange vum Ofgang.

She can swim well. However, she's afraid of the deep end.

souwisou

anyway / in any case

Used to introduce a conclusion or statement that stands regardless of what was said before; used to move forward with a decision

Examples:

Et kann rënn. Souwisou ginn ech spazéieren.

It might rain. Anyway, I'm going for a walk.

Hien ass laang net komm. Souwisou musse mir ouni him starten.

He hasn't come yet. In any case, we have to start without him.

Si huet vill Aarbecht. Souwisou gëtt si d'Reunioun net vergësson.

She has a lot of work. Anyway, she won't forget the meeting.
